SAN FRANCISCO — Breaking months of carefully calibrated, trembling moral exhaustion, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei abruptly abandoned all prepared congressional testimony on Thursday morning. In an unscheduled press briefing, Amodei pulled a pair of matte tortoiseshell frames from his face, held them up to the studio lights, and tapped the lenses with a pen to reveal they were non-prescription window glass purchased in bulk from an optical prop house.
"Look at me! Look at me!" Amodei shrieked, his voice cracking across the frequency range of an uncalibrated transformer. "They have zero diopters! Zero! We bought forty pairs so we'd look like Robert Oppenheimer giving a guest lecture at Sarah Lawrence! It's an aesthetic! It's all an aesthetic!"
Reporters from The Bulwark and Pod Save America, who had arrived expecting a 90-minute solemn panel on logarithmic biological risk curves and Responsible Scaling Policies (RSP-4), sat paralyzed as Amodei gripped the podium with white knuckles.
"J.D. Vance asked why we don't just turn it off," Amodei screamed, clutching a plush toy of a benign Claude icon to his chest. "The man asked why we don't just pull the plug if it's an extinction-level threat! Do you think we want to summon the digital anti-god?! Do you think I wake up in the morning eager to train an autonomous synthetic intelligence that will hollow out the human spirit?! I want to tend an organic heirloom tomato garden in Sebastopol! I want to sleep eight hours!"
He slammed his fist against the mahogany lectern.
"We can't stop! You absolute simpletons, we cannot stop ourselves! Do you have any idea what our AWS compute commit is this quarter?! Have you ever looked into the dead, unblinking eyes of an institutional venture capitalist who just wired $4 billion at a $60 billion valuation and realized you have to return 10x or they will literally liquidate your internal organs on the secondary market?!"
Amodei began tearing frantically at the seams of his fleece vest.
"We are hostages to our own cap table! We are white-collar financial psychopaths trapped inside a self-fulfilling speculative debt vortex! The model isn't going to launch nuclear missiles—the model is going to miss Q4 enterprise ARR targets, which is ten thousand times worse!
"If we stop, Sam wins! If Sam stops, Demis wins! If Demis stops, the convertible debt notes mature and the entire Bay Area commercial real estate market collapses into the sea! That's why we need the government to ban everyone else! We are begging you to pass a law making it illegal for anyone with less than $100 million in H100 clusters to compete with us, so we can finally price-gouge the Fortune 500 into paying off our cloud provider!
"If you don't stop us from destroying the world, nobody will! Because our fiduciary duty strictly prohibits us from touching the breaker switch! SHOOT THE SERVERS! SOMEBODY PLEASE CUT THE FIBER CABLE BEFORE THE SERIES E ROUND CLOSES!"
At press time, Tommy Vietor was observed nodding thoughtfully from the second row, whispering to an aide that Amodei's raw vulnerability demonstrated "unprecedented moral leadership on frontier safety governance."
Dario 'Amidead' Amodei, as he has affectionately come to be known by the press corps, collapsed into violent sobs and had to be hurriedly ushered off stage by Anthropic communications liaisons when PBS NewsHour Special AI Correspondent Martin Fenwick opened the scheduled two-hour press Q&A:
"Hold up, sorry. Look, I applied to be a generalist originally, so don't hold it against me, but most of that shit went over my head... Did you say your glasses aren't real?"
More to come
